What is Yarn Count?

Yarn count is a general term for the units used to express the thickness or fineness of a yarn. There are two families of systems: direct systems such as Tex and Denier, which are based on length (a higher number means a thicker yarn), and indirect systems such as English Cotton Count (Ne) and Metric Count (Nm), which are based on weight (a higher number means a finer, thinner yarn). Because the relationship between the number and thickness is reversed between the two families, conversion mistakes are common in trading and production. This tool is published by AVILAS, a raw yarn manufacturer based in Nara, Japan, based on the count-conversion work used in our own operations, and is useful for confirming yarn count when trading nylon yarn, polyester yarn, or OEM sock yarn.

AVILAS plans, manufactures, and sells long-fiber (chemical fiber) yarn, including woolly nylon yarn, for sock and apparel production. For inquiries about yarn specifications or trading, please contact us via the AVILAS Corporation website.

* English Cotton Count and Linen Count are calculated using standard approximation formulas based on the official moisture regain for cotton and linen. In actual trading, please treat these as reference values and account for material-specific moisture regain and ply count (e.g., 40/2). For plied/folded yarns, convert to a single-yarn value before entering it above.
